Sunglasses seem to have one obvious job: protecting your eyes from the sun. Put them on when it is bright, take them off when it’s not, and tuck them into a pocket or hang them from your shirt collar until you need them again.
But men’s style is changing the way we wear sunglasses.
From street style to fashion campaigns, sunglasses are increasingly being treated as part of the outfit whether they are actually covering your eyes or not. More than a practical accessory, sunglasses have become something closer to jewellery: another layer that can add personality, shape, and detail to a look.
The new way to wear your sunglasses
Forget the pocket or the collar. One of the most effortless ways to style sunglasses right now is to flip them up on top of your head, almost like a headband.
There are a few practical reasons behind the look. Firstly, for men with longer hair, sunglasses can help keep it pushed back and out of the face. And secondly, it means they are much harder to lose.
As well as that, sunglasses can often be bulky to carry around when you factor in their case. Carrying a sunglasses case often means having a bag, turning what should be a simple accessory into something rather more cumbersome. Wearing your sunglasses on your head keeps them close, accessible, and away from the keys, coins and other items that could scratch them in your pocket.
But practicality is only part of the appeal. When worn this way, a great pair of sunglasses becomes visible even when you don’t need to wear them, adding another element to your outfit.
Keeping the outfit intact
The creative possibilities are arguably even more interesting.
Speaking to GQ, Literary Sport creative director Jackie McKeown talked about styling sunglasses as a headband or on top of a beanie to add depth to an outfit. As she puts it: “I think it keeps the fit intact in a certain way, like when you are sitting in a bar, and you have to take off the glasses. It allows them to still be part of the outfit without being on your face.”
That idea feels central to the trend. Your sunglasses do not have to disappear simply because you have stepped indoors.
Worn on your head, they can maintain the shape, colour, and character of an outfit. A bold frame can add contrast to a neutral look, while classic tortoiseshell or black sunglasses can bring definition to more casual basics.
Style sunglasses your way
And the experimentation doesn’t stop there. Men's sunglasses are being worn backwards, hung around the neck, or even attached to a belt loop. Whether they are on your face or not, sunglasses can now be another deliberate addition to your look. Much like a watch or ring, the right pair of sunglasses says something about your personal style.
So, next time the sun disappears, don’t automatically put your sunglasses away. The most stylish way to wear them right now might not be for their original purpose at all.
