The cosy corner edit
Autumn is officially reading season. The evenings are getting darker, the blankets are coming out, and suddenly spending an hour in a corner of the house with a good book feels like exactly the right thing to do.
So, if your home is missing a dedicated cosy corner, consider this your sign to create one.
Start with the right chair
You want somewhere you can properly settle into. A generous armchair, a vintage style reading chair, or a deep, comfortable accent chair will do the job.
Add a couple of cushions and a soft throw in autumnal shades (think warm brown, rust, cream or deep green), and you've immediately got somewhere you will quite happily spend the afternoon.
Now add the atmosphere
Good reading requires good lighting. A warm, directional floor or table lamp is ideal for darker evenings, while a scented candle adds that extra layer of cosiness- especially in a delicious autumnal scent.
For the ultimate bookish atmosphere, The Wandering Bee's ‘Antique Bookshop’ candle feels almost too appropriate. Its blend of dark plum, ginger, incense, cinnamon, vanilla, amber and cashmere woods is practically an invitation to curl up with a novel.
Then comes another essential accessory - a beautiful mug. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate or an autumnal spiced latte… we'll leave that bit up to you.
Choose your next read
Naturally, your cosy corner needs a book pile, so here are a couple of our current favourite autumn picks to get your started.
For something entertaining and easy to settle into, Richard Osman's We Chase Shadows is currently topping the UK fiction bestseller chart, bringing back his amateur sleuths for another mystery.
Or embrace the season with Disenchanted by Lucy Jane Wood, a bestselling fantasy about a reluctant witch and a mysterious book that triggers a curse. It's currently sitting in the UK fiction chart too and is perfect for if you’re looking for something a little bit magical in the run up to Halloween.
Don't forget your reading glasses
Of course, no reading nook is complete without the perfect pair of reading glasses.
And why have just one pair? The whole idea of your cosy corner is that everything should be calm, simple and relaxing, which means you don’t want to spend time hunting for your reading glasses every time you want to look at your book! Instead, keep a pair of stylish reading glasses permanently in your reading corner so they're always within reach. London Mole's affordable reading glasses are available at a price point that makes it easy to have a few pairs dotted around the house.
Think about the colour and finish of your reading glasses; what would give you the ultimate cosy feeling? Warm brown or classic tortoiseshell reading glasses are ideal for autumn. And maybe consider a soft, rubberised finish for ultimate comfort too.
Now all that's left to do is light the candle, pour the drink, pick up your book and settle in. Autumn evenings don't get much cosier than this.
